Anne Arundel County wraps around more than 500 miles of tidal shoreline, and that shoreline defines how driveways get built here. The southern end, which locals call South County, is where we live and work every day: Deale, Shady Side, Churchton, and Tracys Landing along the Bay, with the farms and horse properties of Lothian, Harwood, and Davidsonville just inland. The ground near the water is low and sandy with a high water table. A few miles west it turns to rolling clay. The waterfront adds one more consideration. Land within 1,000 feet of tidal water falls in the Chesapeake Bay Critical Area, where the amount of hard surface on a lot is limited.
