Free Estimate: (410) 212-8084Milling is the process of grinding off the top layer of existing asphalt with a machine built for the job. It removes the worn, cracked surface to a controlled depth and leaves a rough, clean platform that new asphalt bonds to extremely well.
Why mill instead of just paving over the top? Height. Every overlay raises the pavement. On a parking lot that means asphalt creeping up over curbs, burying drain inlets, and creating lips at sidewalks and doorways. On a driveway it means a bump at the garage and the street. Milling first takes the old surface down so the new one finishes at the right elevation, and water keeps draining the way it was designed to.

Milling also lets us remove surface-level damage without disturbing a base that is still sound, which saves a property owner real money compared with full-depth reconstruction.
The ground-up material, called millings or recycled asphalt, has a second life. Spread, graded, and compacted, millings make an economical driveway or lane surface that binds together better than plain gravel, especially after a hot summer. What is the difference between milling and full removal?
Milling takes off the top layer of asphalt to a set depth and leaves the rest in place. Full removal takes out all the asphalt down to the base. Milling is right when the damage is in the surface and the structure below is sound.
Are asphalt millings a good driveway surface?
For long lanes and budget-minded projects, yes. Compacted millings knit together and hold up better than loose gravel, with less dust. They are not as smooth or as finished as new hot-mix asphalt.
Do you mill residential driveways?
We mill the transitions on driveway overlays, at the garage, street, and walkways, so the new surface sits flush. Full-width milling is more common on parking lots and larger areas.
