Free Estimate: (410) 212-8084A new driveway is a blank page, which is good news. There is no bad base to inherit and no old mistakes to work around. It also means every decision is yours to get right or wrong: where it runs, how wide it is, where the water goes, and how much stone sits under it.
South State Paving installs new asphalt driveways for new construction, for homes converting a gravel or dirt lane, and for properties adding a second entrance, a parking pad, or a turnaround. We start with layout. How many vehicles? Any trailers, boats, or work trucks? Where does the water run in a hard rain? A driveway that is two feet too narrow or pitched toward the garage is a daily annoyance for the next 25 years.
Then comes the part that matters most. We strip the topsoil, cut the grade, and build a compacted stone base sized for the ground and the traffic. On new construction we like to see the base go in and carry the construction traffic first, then pave once the heavy trucks are gone. On gravel conversions, the existing stone is often a good start and we add, regrade, and compact from there.
Paving is hot-mix asphalt placed by machine and rolled tight, with clean edges and a proper tie-in at the road. If your entrance meets a county or state road, there may be apron or permit requirements, and we will talk through that during the estimate.

How much does a new driveway installation cost?
It depends on square footage, the condition of the base underneath, how much drainage or grading the lot needs, material thickness, and how easily equipment can get in. We do not quote off a phone call or a satellite photo. We walk the property, measure it, and hand you a free written estimate that spells out exactly what is included.
Can you pave over my existing gravel driveway?
Often, yes. A gravel driveway that has been driven on for years can make a solid starting base. We check the depth and the material, add stone where it is thin, regrade for drainage, compact it, and then pave.
When should a new construction driveway be paved?
Late in the build. Get the stone base in early so trucks have something to drive on, then pave after the heavy deliveries and equipment are finished. Paving too early means concrete trucks and dumpsters beating up brand new asphalt.
Do I need a permit for a new driveway entrance?
It depends on the road you are connecting to and the county. New entrances onto county or state roads commonly need an access or apron permit. We will go over what applies to your property when we come out.
